• Salvonic Gospels and Epistle books have several kinds of markings in the margin. One set of markings denotes the prescribes reading for the day, the feast of the Saint. There is another set of markings which are names of weekdays and numbers, which do not refer to the liturgical readings read in church, but are divisions for use in reading the New Testament privately ("in one's kellia").

  • This document lists these private reading divisons, up to this time not available in English.

  • This system results in the Epistles, minus the Apocalypse which is
  • not printed in the liturgical Epistolary, being read through in 8 weeks,
  • and the Gospels being read through in 4 weeks.

  • Since the Revelation (Apocalypse) of St. John is prescribed to be read in some seasons at the Night Vigil, and is in the Slavonic Bible, it is also included in the table below.

  • If read consecutively, the entire New Testament would thus be read through in 14 weeks, or about 4 times a year.

  • If read concurrently, the Gospels would be read through each month (actually 13 times in a year), and the Episles would be read in their entirety five times a year.

  • Thus far the Introductions to each of the Books of the New Testament that are in the Slavonic Epistle and Gospel books have not been
  • published in English.

    136. On 23 Aug 99, Fr. John Shaw posted the "Lectionary for the Kellia" to the
    137. Ustav List. Below is an updated/corrected version of this Lectionary.
    138. Fr. John's version was set up for consecutive reading of the whole New
    139. Testament (including the Revelation or Apocalpyse of St. John) over a period
    140. of fourteen weeks.
    141. Another possible way of using the "Lectionary for the Kellia" would be to
    142. read the the Apostolos and Gospel simultaneously over a period of eight
    143. weeks, with the Gospel being read twice each time the Apostolos is read
    144. once. This could be conveniently coordinated with the eight-week cycle of
    145. the tones of the Octoechos. Such a method does not include the Revelation,
    146. which would have to be read separately.
