Third Antiphon (Beatitudes)

10 Troparia: 6 from the Octoechos and 4 from Ode III of the canon of the Protection

  1. We offer Thee the voice of the thief and cry aloud to Thee: Remember us, O Saviour in Thy Kingdom.
  2. We bring Thee the Cross for the forgiveness of offenses. For us hast Thou accepted it, O Lover of mankind.
  3. We venerate, O Master, Thy tomb and Thy rising, through which Thou hast delivered the world from corruption, O Lover of Mankind.
  4. By Thy death, O Lord, death has been swallowed up, and by Thy Resurrection, Saviour, has the world been saved.
  5. Those sleeping in darkness have seen Thee, the Light, and they have risen out of the nethermost parts of hell, O Christ.
  6. Risen from the tomb Thou hast met the women bearing myrrh and told the disciples to proclaim Thy Rising.
  7. Like an unploughed field thou didst manifestly produce the divine Grain. Rejoice, O animate table holding the Bread of life! Rejoice, O Mistress, thou inexhaustible well-spring of the Water of life!
  8. O Mistress, we thy people, standing before thee with faith in thy church, await thy mercy. Visit our lowliness, and with thy holy protection defend the Orthodox people from all evil.
  9. O far-famed virgin who was honorably prefigured by the prophets, with the angels they now do thee homage. Pray thou to God with them, that, rejoicing, we may all splendidly celebrate thy holy protection today.
  10. Gideon prefigured thee as a fleece, for Christ God descended upon thee like dew. Pray thou to Him, O Theotokos, that He grant victory to our Orthodox hierarchs over all heresies, that, casting them down like the Midianites, they may glorify thy holy feast.

Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 2)

When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, / then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. / And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, / all the Hosts of the Heavens cried out: / O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

Troparion of the Protection (Tone 4)

Overshadowed by thy coming, O Mother of God, we, the right faithful people, celebrate today with splendor, and gazing at thine all-precious image, we say with compunction: Cover us with thy precious omophorion, and deliver us from all evil, entreating thy Son, Christ our God, that He save our souls..

Kontakion of the Resurrection (Tone 2)

Thou didst arise from the tomb, O omnipotent Saviour, / and Hades was terrified on beholding the wonder; / and the dead arose, and creation at the sight thereof rejoiceth with Thee. / And Adam also is joyful, // and the world, O my Saviour, praiseth Thee for ever.

Kontakion of the Protection (Tone 3)
Spec Mel: "Today the Virgin..."

Today the Virgin standeth forth in the church, and with the choirs of the saints she invisibly prayeth to God for us. Angels and hierarchs offer homage, and the apostles and prophets join chorus; for for our sake the Theotokos entreateth the pre eternal God.

The Prokeimenon in the 2nd Tone

The Lord is my strength and my song, // and He is become my salvation. (Ps. 117:14)

Vs/ With chastisement hath the Lord chastened me, but He hath not given me over unto death. (Ps. 117:18)

And in the 3rd Tone

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my Spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

Epistle: (2 Corinthians 11:31 - 12:9;)

Brethren: The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not. In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me: And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands. It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I knew a man in Christ abov e fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities. For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me..

Brethren: Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people.

The Alleluia in the 2nd Tone

(NO PAUSE before first verse)The Lord hear thee in the day of affliction; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee. (Ps. 19:1)

Vs/ O Lord, save the king, and hearken unto us in the day when we call upon Thee. (Ps. 19:9)

And in the 8th Tone

Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thine ear.

Gospel: (Luke 6:31-36; Luke 10:38-42; 11:27-28)

At that time Jesus said, As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to the m which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

At that time: Jesus entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbere d about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art care ful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lift ed up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Communion Verse

Praise the Lord in the heavens, praise Him in the highest!

I will take the cup of salvation, and I will call upon the name of the Lord.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
