Third Antiphon (Beatitudes)

10 Troparia:6 from the Octoechoes, 4 from Odes 4 & 5 of canon 2 of the Feast

  1. The fruit which slew me was beautiful and good to eat; but Christ is the Tree of life, and eating of Him I do not die, but cry out with the thief: Remember me, O Lord, in Thy kingdom!
  2. O Compassionate One, Who wast lifted up upon the Cross, Thou hast erased the record of Adam's ancient sin, and hast saved the whole human race from deception. Wherefore, we hymn Thee, O Lord and Benefactor.
  3. Thou didst nail our sins to Cross, O compassionate Christ, and by Thy death Thou didst slay death, O Thou who didst raise up the dead from among the dead. Wherefore, we worship Thy holy resurrection.
  4. The serpent once poured its venom into the ears of Eve; but on the tree of the Cross, Christ poured forth the sweetness of life upon the world. Wherefore, we cry out: Remember us, O Lord, in Thy kingdom!
  5. Thou wast laid in the tomb as one dead, O Christ, Thou Life of all; and Thou didst break down the gates of hades; and having risen again in glory on the third day as One mighty, Thou hast illumined all. Glory to Thine arising!
  6. Having risen from the dead on the third day, the Lord bestowed His peace upon His disciples; and having blessed them, He sent them forth saying: Lead all into My kingdom!
  7. The Patriarch Jacob, clearly foreseeing the mighty works of Thy dispensation, O Savior, cried out in the Spirit, saying mystically to Judah: "From the tender plant thou art gone up, O my Son!", referring to Thee, O God, Who wast born of the Virgin.
  8. Now the pure Virgin, the rod of Aaron which sprung forth from the root of David, cometh forth from Anna, and heaven and earth and all the nations of the gentiles mystically join chorus together with Anna and Joachim.
  9. Thy nativity is all-pure, O immaculate Virgin, thy conception is ineffable, and thy birthgiving unutterable, O Bride unwedded; for God hath clad Himself in all of me.
  10. Thy womb becameth the chariot of the Sun; thy purity remained intact as before, O Virgin; for Christ the Sun appeared from thee like a Bridegroom from a bridal chamber.

Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 7)

Thou didst destroy death by Thy Cross, / Thou didst open Paradise to the thief. / Thou didst change the lamentation of the Myrrh-bearers, / and Thou didst command Thine Apostles / to proclaim that Thou didst arise, / O Christ God, // and grantest to the world great mercy.

Troparion of the Nativity of the Theotokos (Tone 4)

Thy nativity, O Virgin Theotokos, hath proclaimed joy to all the world; for from thee hath shone forth Christ our God, the Sun of righteousness, Who, having annulled the curse, that given His blessing, and having abolished death, hath granted us life everlasting.

Troparion of the Temple

Kontakion of the Resurrection (Tone 7)

No longer will the dominion of death / be able to keep men captive; / for Christ hath descended, / demolishing and destroying the powers thereof. / Hades is bound; / the Prophets rejoice with one voice, saying: / A Saviour hath come for them that have faith. / Come forth, ye faithful, // for the Resurrection.

Kontakion of the Temple

Glory ...

Kontakion of Martyrs Menodora, Metrodora & Nymphodora (Tone 4) Special melody: "Having been lifted up..."

Clad as sinters in the Spirit, ye who contended with endurance for the Trinity have vanquished the greatly cunning enemy; wherefore, ye have made your abode with the five virgins in the heavenly bridal chamber, O passion-bearers, and with the angels ye

Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos (Tone 4)

In thy holy nativity, O all-pure one, Joachim and Anna are fried from the reproach of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from mortal corruption. And, delivered from the affliction of sin, thy people celebrate it, crying out to thee: A barren woman giveth birth to the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life!

The Prokimenon in the 6th Tone

O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance.

Unto Thee, O Lord, will I cry; O my God, be not silent unto me.

And in the 3rd Tone

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

Epistle: (Galatians 6:11-18)

Brethren: Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

The Alleluia in the 1st Tone

(NO pause before first verse)

I have raised up one chosen out of my people; with My holy oil have I anointed him.

For my hand shall be unto Him an ally, and Mine arm shall strengthen him.

And in the 8th Tone

Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thine ear.

Gospel: (John 3:13-17)

The Lord said: No man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Instead of "It is truly meet," we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the Second Canon of the feast, Eighth Tone:

Communion Verse

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest.

I will take the cup of salvation, and I will call upon the name of the Lord

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
