INTRODUCTION to the English Translation of the Slavonic Apostol

This book is based the Slavonic Apostol published by Holy Trinity Monastery (Jordanville, 1970).

Additions to the Menaion section have been made for newer services, and one extra pericope “begin” was added to mark the reading for St. John of Kronstadt (beginning at 1 John 4:7).

The text of the New Testament is taken from the King James Version of the Bible.

The texts of Prokeimena, Alleluia, Communion Hymns, and Antiphons are taken from The Divine Liturgy for Choir and Laity (Jordanville, NY: Holy Trinity Monastery, 1992), the Sluzhebnik: All-Night Vigil (Jordanville, 1990), The Menaion (Liberty, TN: St. John of Kronstradt Press and reader Isaac Lambertson, 1996) and the Psalter according to the Seventy (Boston: Holy Transfiguration Monastery, 1987).

In order to preserve the integrity of the King James text, no words were changed or removed.

In a few cases, when a word was added to match the text of the Slavonic Apostol, this word was enclosed with square brackets. See 1 Corinthians 4:16. In addition, the last three verses of Romans 16 were moved to the end of Romans 14, to match the order of the Slavonic text and the corresponding pericope. In several cases, the text was edited near the beginning of a reading to make it possible to properly render to reading’s introduction in English. This was done for readings 94, 160, and 174A.
