Father, Bless,

It is a mystery how we each come to finally 'get it'---to realize that life is more than what it seems on the surface, to realize that we have wasted and squandered our lives in pursuit of things that do not matter. For each of us it is a unique calling....

In the Gospels we see desperate parents come to Christ when their children are dying or held in bondage to evil. Others come driven by their own suffering and illnesses. And some, like the thief on the cross, spend their whole lives surviving by robbing and sucking the life out of others, only to one day find themselves on a cross looking into the face of God.

It is such a mystery that I really don't even know how I finally was awakened from the slumber of ignorance, from dreaming the world's dreams and mindlessly sailing away from God. As with Jonah, it took a storm--but that was only part of it. Even with the storm raging, Jonah still slept soundly below deck. It took someone coming to him and waking him up.

Father, thank you for your efforts to rouse us from our slumber in the midst of the raging storm. The Lord will use your exhortations, intercession and prayers and that of others and the tribulations of life to wake us up. We'll rise and experience the fury of the storm. We'll be thrown out of our comfortable 'cruise ships' to Tarshish and even begin to drown. But the Lord has provided for our salvation and will lift us up from the depths and deliver us safely to dry land.
