Jerry, like all prophecies, the OT types of the cross are subtle - this is why we need the tradition to help us see them. So yes, the pole with the serpent is a type (symbol, prophecy) of the cross. So is:
- the wood which sweetened the bitter water
- the cross-like way in which Moses held out his arms while fighting Amalek
- the cross-like manner in which Israel blessed the sons of Joseph
- the letter "tau" which was marked on the lintels at the Exodus
- the way Moses held his staff to part and re-join the waters of the Red Sea: first he held it one direction, then perpendicular to that.
and so forth : ).

There is no reason why we should not know all of these references to Christ and the cross from the OT since it tells us in the NT that on the road to Emmaus, "beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he [Christ] explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself." Lk 24:27

A few of these references are mentioned in the NT scripture but even Protestants recognize references to Him that aren't mentioned in NT scripture. So obviously we didn't get all the references handed down to us through NT scripture---the rest of "all the Scriptures concerning himself" had to have been passed down through oral means, starting with Cleopas and his companion who walked with Jesus on the road to Emmaus.
